Our Mission
The Long Beach Sailing Foundation's mission is to encourage and promote national and international amateur sailing and to facilitate maritime education and community sailing opportunities.
We are a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit organization, formed to own, maintain and manage a fleet of identical Catalina 37 sailboats donated by Frank Butler, the president of Catalina Yachts, for use in Long Beach Yacht Club's signature event, the Congressional Cup.
Stem Education
Throughout the year you will see and hear about our programs designed to support STEM education, sailor development and community outreach. These programs are made possible through the support of our donors and through our partnerships with Long Beach Yacht Club, the US Sailing Center and many members of our local sailing.
Community Outreach
During Congressional Cup week, which is open to the public for viewing, you can see the Catalina 37s in the hands of the best sailors and skippers in the world. In the months following Congressional Cup you’ll be able to see the “37s” being skippered and crewed by both young people, and older “youth” from all over Long Beach and points beyond.
In promoting youth sailing, the Foundation has been able to introduce area teenagers, who may never have been near a boat, to the excitement of competitive sailing, as they crew on Wednesday evening races throughout the summer or participate in our middle school STEM program.
Neither of these activities would be possible without our youth and community outreach partners, the Long Beach Yacht Club and its members and the US Sailing Center. These partners and dozens of sailor volunteers are also critical to our other community outreach activities throughout the year -- Heroes Regatta for local police officers and firefighters, Patriot Regatta for active-duty military members and Sea Gals, a women's sailing program that introduces women to sailing and helps them develop as sailors.
