OUR STORY
At the heart of our mission is the Catalina 37 fleet – identical racing yachts that double as platforms for competition and education. Donated in 1990 by Catalina Yachts founder Frank Butler, these boats brought fairness and precision to match racing, launching what would become the Long Beach Sailing Foundation. Since then, they have hosted top sailors like Ted Turner and James Spithill in the world-renowned Congressional Cup, where success is earned by skill – not equipment.
While their competitive legacy is impressive, the Catalina 37s also serve as the foundation for LBSF’s broader community mission. Through partnerships with local schools and nonprofits, the fleet supports youth outreach and STEM education programs, introducing students — many of whom are experiencing sailing for the first time — to the sport without financial barriers. The fleet also supports special outreach events, such as the Heroes Regatta and Patriot Regatta, offering memorable sailing experiences to local firefighters, police officers, and other first responders, as well as active-duty military personnel—honoring their service and connecting them to the power of the sea.

CATALINA 37 FLEET
The Boats that Built Champions and Community.
The Catalina 37’s, known by most as “the 37’s”, have been the boats for the Long Beach Yacht Club’s iconic event, Congressional Cup, for more than 30 years. Over the years, they have also become the platform for LBYC’s extensive match racing program – Ficker Cup, Mayors Cup, California Dreaming Series, and Butler Cup.
The Sailing Foundation makes the fleet available for many other events throughout the year – Harbor Cup Invitational Intercollegiate Regatta, Long Beach Race Week, and the Linda Elias Memorial Women’s One Design Challenge, to name a few. However, that is only part of the Sailing Foundation’s story.
Throughout the year, the Sailing Foundation, working with many partners, undertakes activities that promote national and international amateur sailing, maritime education, and community outreach. The Foundation’s focus is to be a part of the ‘future’ of amateur sailing and a valued community partner.
